Military Appreciation Event Helps Dayton Earn ADC Recognition

first_imgFor the past 10 years, the Dayton region has held an annual appreciation effort to celebrate the military personnel serving at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Springfield Air National Guard Base in western Ohio. The “Hometown Heroes” program, spearheaded by the Dayton Development Coalition, provides thousands of tickets to military members to local sporting events and other entertainment. At a Dayton Dragons baseball game, airmen from Wright-Patterson are welcomed onto the field and recognized for their service.“This is a chance to celebrate the airmen of Wright-Patt,” Jeff Hoagland, president and CEO of the coalition, told the Dayton Business Journal. “Every year we’re honored to do this. These airmen have made a lot of sacrifices for their country. We want to make them feel welcome when they come to Dayton.”The two bases are a significant part of the Miami Valley economy, supporting 60,000 jobs in the region and generating a $4.1 billion annual economic impact.“Hometown Heroes is more than the tickets donated to the airmen at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. It is more than a series of sporting events, musicals and shows; it’s about the Dayton region’s belief in the importance of service,” Hoagland said.Last month, the Dayton region was honored by ADC as one of the Great American Defense Communities. In presenting the award, ADC President Mike Cooper cited the Hometown Heroes program as one of the reasons Dayton stood out.“You see a program like this that works so well that other installations want to follow it,” Cooper said. “Part of the award is how the community helps airmen find housing and living arrangements. But part of it is how it helps them feel welcomed, too.”ADC launched the Great American Defense Communities program to acknowledge the unique contributions cities, counties and regions that host installations make to improve quality of life for service members, veterans and their families. The inaugural class of 10 communities was selected by a panel of defense community advocates and experts from dozens of nominees based on the broad range of efforts they carry out on behalf of military personnel and their families, covering areas such as education, job opportunities, housing, family support during deployments and community appreciation. Frank Sinatra To Billie Holiday New Yorks Cabaret Law Is Out

first_imgNETWORK ERRORCannot Contact ServerRELOAD YOUR SCREEN OR TRY SELECTING A DIFFERENT VIDEO May 15, 2017 – 1:50 am Frank Sinatra gets ‘best welcome he’s ever had’ Email News New York Cabaret Law On The Chopping Block frank-sinatra-billie-holiday-new-yorks-cabaret-law-out Frank Sinatra To Billie Holiday: New York’s Cabaret Law Is Out Facebook Twitter Since 1926, New York City’s bars and clubs have been subject to the Cabaret Law, which made it illegal to host “musical entertainment, singing, dancing, or other form of amusement” without a proper license. New York Times reports the law actually required performers and employees of the cabaret to register and carry “cabaret cards” in order to perform in clubs, which also had to have a cabaret license.A host of legendary musicians were denied “cabaret cards” due to their legal records, including Holiday, Charles, Thelonious Monk, and Charlie Parker. Sinatra refused to perform in New York for years rather than allow himself to be fingerprinted.More recently, the law has caused business owners to live in fear of the antiquated law, and justifiably so. In the 1990s, former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani revived the law, using it to shut down dance clubs. Opponents of the law have pointed out that this trend led to more dance parties in unsafe, unregulated environments such as abandoned warehouses. Now, Rafael Espinal, a councilman from Brooklyn, says he has the votes necessary to pass a repeal of the law, a motion supported by current New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, according to spokesman Ben Sarle. The mayor instead plans to emphasize retaining and improving security measures so New Yorkers can safely get back to the music.Neil Portnow Talks 60th GRAMMY Awards Return To New York The law that barred the likes of Ray Charles and Charlie Parker from performing in New York is on the way outNate HertweckGRAMMYs Nov 1, 2017 – 5:20 pm After nearly a century, a law restricting performances in New York is finally going away. Oppo Reno 10x Zoom beats this invincible flagship Is it worth buying

first_imgClose Huawei P30 Pro First Impressions, a super camera smartphone with extensive photography skills Oppo has finally marked its entry into the premium smartphone segment in India with the launch of all-new Reno series. Oppo Reno and Reno 10x Zoom defy the existing rival flagships in India by offering some unique features exclusive to its new phones. The camera is clearly the standout feature in the new Reno 10x Zoom, but there’s more to it than meets the eye.Oppo Reno 10x Zoom edition is the premium edition while Oppo Reno is the affordable offering in the company’s flagship portfolio. The Reno 10x Zoom comes in two variants, 6GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB, priced at Rs 39,990 and Rs 49,990, respectively. Oppo Reno comes with a price tag of Rs 32,990 for 8GB+128GB configuration and sale of both phones commence from June 7 on Flipkart.Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is the showstopper despite both phones carrying several similarities. What differentiates the Reno 10x Zoom edition from the regular variant is the camera among other things. There’s a triple rear camera setup combining a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor with f/1.7 aperture, a 13MP periscope-style telephoto lens and an 8MP super wide-angle lens. With this camera, Oppo Reno 10x zoom, as the name implies, offers 10x lossless hybrid optical zoom and up to 60x digital zoom. Last we heard of such high numbers was during Huawei P30 Pro review, which was famous for its moon shot using 50x digital zoom. Oppo’s new smartphone beats the invincible flagship’s popular feature, but we are yet to test the phone to draw a final conclusion. That doesn’t mean Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is any less impressive. It packs dual OIS to capture stable images, AI-based Ultra Night Mode 2.0 for clear night shots, HDR, noise reduction and portrait mode. All this while charging at least Rs 20,000 less than Huawei P30 Pro. Oppo Reno 10x Zoom launched in IndiaOppoOppo also boasts of video recording features in the Reno 10x Zoom, which supports 4K 60fps with OIS, three microphones to leverage features like audio zoom recording and 3D surround sound capture. There’s also an interesting design for the front pop-up camera, which swings from one side and looks like a shark fin. It houses a 16MP sensor. The pop-up design is something we haven’t seen on any phone and it’s interesting to witness the different innovations companies are exploring to obtain the highest screen-to-body ratio.Oppo Reno 10x Zoom features a 6.6-inch panoramic AMOLED display with 93.1 percent screen-to-body ratio and a naturally sleek and premium back. The attention to detail on the Reno 10x Zoom is pretty impressive, complete with an O-Dot ceramic point on the 3D curved glass back to protect the lens cover. The handsets boast an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner, Dolby Atmos and Tri-cooling Control, which combines Thermal Gel, a Graphite Sheet, Copper Pipe Liquid Cooling, to effectively keep the temperatures down. Oppo Reno 10x Zoom launched in IndiaOppoOppo hasn’t really focused on the phone’s performance until now as it prioritised camera, design and affordability above all. With Reno 10x Zoom, everything changes. There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset with ColorOS 6.0 that offers excellent gaming performance. Under the hood, there’s a 4,065mAh battery with VOOC 3.0 fast charging technology. The overall specifications of Oppo Reno 10x Zoom make a compelling choice for those who looking for a premium flagship at the right price. It poses an even bigger threat to OnePlus 7 Pro.Taking a page from OnePlus playbook, Oppo launched Reno smartphone to target budget shoppers. The downgrades customers must be willing to accept include Snapdragon 710 chipset, a 6.4-inch panoramic display, 48MP+5MP rear camera and a smaller 3,765mAh battery with VOOC 3.0. Given the price difference, it would make sense for buyers to go for the 10x Zoom edition, even if it is the base model.last_img read more

TX Abortion Rights Groups And AntiAbortion Groups Await Expected SCOTUS Ruling

first_img Share The Supreme Court is expected to rule Monday on the final Texas case this session. Passed in 2013, House Bill 2 requires physicians performing abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. Clinics must also meet the standards of ambulatory surgical centers.According to the Center for Reproductive Rights, there are 19 clinics in the state of Texas that still perform abortions – down from 41 before the law was passed. If the Supreme Court allows it to stand, only 9 abortion clinics are expected to remain open.Nan Kirkpatrick is executive director of the Texas Equal Access Fund which helps low-income women pay for abortions. While she’s eagerly awaiting Monday’s ruling, she says access to abortion in Texas has already suffered.  “Damage has already been done and there’s no going back on that. Our only hope is that the Supreme Court will decide to strike down the law and hopefully we’ll get some clinics back in those communities that are hundreds of miles from care,” says Kirkpatrick.Kyleen Wright, president of the pro-life group Texans For Life, says the restrictions in House Bill 2 make abortions much safer for women.“We fervently hope the court upholds the restrictions that pretty much govern every other medical surgery. The last thing we want is two victims of abortion, baby and mom,” she says. “Women seeking abortion deserve the same high standards of every other surgical patient and we hope and pray the court agrees.”This story comes out of the Texas Station Collaborative, a new joint project of KERA in North Texas, Houston Public Media, KUT in Austin and Texas Public Radio in San Antonio. Copyright 2016 KERA-FM.
