Country-pop legend Glen Campbell passed away yesterday at the age 81 from Alzheimer’s complications. While those closest to him lost a beloved husband, father, and trusted friend, the world lost a musician who made an indelible mark on the music scene. His battle with the insidious disease and his final concert tour was the subject of the 2014 documentary I’ll Be Me. Campbell’s solo career began in 1961, and over the next five decades, he sold 45 million records, won every conceivable award possible as a country and pop musician (including four Grammys in one night!), and contributed to some of the most famous songs ever recorded. Hell, in 1968, he outsold The Beatles. As part of Phil Spector’s legendary coterie of studio musicians known as The Wrecking Crew, Campbell helped make parts of hit songs from Frank Sinatra to The Monkees and even The Beach Boys.In a statement released yesterday, his surviving family said: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and legendary singer and guitarist, Glen Travis Campbell, at the age of 81, following his long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.”In honor of the late Mr. Campbell, we thought it would be a fitting tribute to look at some of his career highlights. We have his chart topping solo work and a few of his most famous session contributions on tap. Check out the videos below for a peek at the amazing range of material he produced over the course of his singularly impressive career below.Glen Campbell, “Witchita Lineman”Though Dean Martin’s version of “Witchita Lineman” was more popular in Europe, in America, the song was always best known as performed by Glen Campbell. As one of his earliest solo chart toppers, it became part of his incredibly popular late-sixties run of classics. The Beach Boys, “Good Vibrations” The Wrecking Crew faced one of their biggest challenges when they helped The Beach Boys bring the legendary psychedelic masterpiece Pet Sounds to life. As always, Campbell and his cohorts managed to create unforgettable music without ever overshadowing the sound of the artists they were backing.Glen Campbell, “Rhinestone Cowboy”Campbell experienced a resurgence in popularity in the late seventies and early eighties, which included the insanely catchy “Rhinestone Cowboy.” The popularity of the song led to a nationwide country-music craze that saw mechanical bulls and cowboy hats fill bars across the nation. Frank Sinatra, “Strangers In the Night”Campbell would always refer to providing back-up for Frank Sinatra in the midst of his heyday as one of his greatest career highlights. Campbell’s work on “Strangers In The Night” was like all of his studio work—exactly what was needed, no more, no less.Glen Campbell, “Gentle On My Mind”From 1969 to 1972, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour was a hit on the CBS network as part of their “rural” block of programming. Campbell’s cover of John Hartford’s “Gentle On My Mind” served as the theme song throughout the show’s run and was etched into the mind of millions of regular viewers.Bob Dylan, “Mr. Tambourine Man”To help thicken out Bob Dylan’s take on “Mr. Tambourine Man,” Campbell was brought in to get the guitar sound perfected to compliment Dylan’s off-tone vocals. The result became one of pop’s most enduring songs.Glen Campbell, “Southern Nights”Glen Campbell scored one his biggest hits with an unlikely cover of Allen Toussaint’s “Southern Nights.” The song served as the title track for his 32nd record and helped Campbell score yet another top ten track. The Monkees, “I’m A Believer” As part of The Wrecking Crew, Campbell’s contribution to The Monkees caused a huge controversy when word that the band hadn’t played their own instruments broke. Check out the rock solid guitar work by Campbell on “I’m A Believer.”Glen Campbell, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You”Glen Campbell’s last single, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” was part of his Academy Award-nominated documentary I’ll Be Me. The track is a poignant final statement from this legendary artist, and though he lost the award, the song lives on forever. The Righteous Brothers, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’”We thought that The Righteous Brothers and their classic hit “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” best summed up how we feel about Mr. Campbell’s passing. The world did indeed lose a little bit of love, but the joy Campbell created will be inspiring a loving feeling for generations to come.
“What we want is a change of mentality in the industry, but this is not a goal in itself. It should lead to a more sustainable world. “In that way, we are agnostic about the way we measure emissions, but the plan should be workable and lead to a change in behaviour,” Van Oostveen said.“In infrastructure, there is a lot to do, and in real estate we have already been working with carbon emissions for years. We have a structure in which managers report to us, so this looks like the easier investment category.”Van Oostveen said he remained agnostic on implementing a carbon cap or target for carbon emissions, but that the industry should be capable of creating a workable standard. In September 2014, the pension fund’s fiduciary asset manager, PGGM, signed up to the Montreal Carbon Pledge, as PFZW set about achieving its new goals by 2020.It vowed to quadruple its sustainable investments via a series of direct investments in green energy, clean technology and sustainable climate-related solutions. It will also compare companies in each industry and sector, subsequently picking the best performer with regards to CO2 emissions, via data from Sustainalytics and MSCI.Click here to read Liam Kennedy’s interview with PFZW director Peter Borgdorff and Van Oosterveen in June’s How We Run Our Money The €178bn pension fund for the Dutch health and welfare sector, PFZW, has said it wants to bring about a change in mentality over the pension sector’s approach to carbon emission management. The second-largest Dutch scheme recently overhauled its investment management with a new set of 11 principles to govern its approach, including a halving its ‘negative sustainability footprint’ and a creating systematic integration of sustainability in its investment process.Speaking in the June issue of IPE, head of investments Jan Willem van Oostveen said PFZW’s €55bn listed equity portfolio, with a carbon footprint of 1.2m tonnes, was a good place to start. However, he conceded it was difficult to assess in other asset classes, but that the fund needed to assess its carbon exposure across all investments, including within its €21bn credit portfolio and €36bn private market investments.
Ausonia will grant a 99-year building/land lease to the East Boston Community Development Corporation (East Boston CDC) and its partner Affirmative Investments, Inc. for the building and land on which it occupies for the elderly housing project, which will be 100% affordable. Currently, East Boston CDC manages the 71 affordable, elderly apartments at Villa Michelangelo, where there is a 2-year waiting list. There is a serious shortage of affordable housing in the neighborhood. In addition to Villa Michelangelo, long waiting lists exist at every affordable housing development; and to compound that problem, residents at the Mercantile Building on Atlantic Avenue have been notified by the new owners that they will be losing their subsidized, affordable rents. Ausonia hopes to continue the project’s momentum and begin construction by late fall this year. The Knights of Columbus, Ausonia Council #1513, is a Catholic, fraternal, charitable non-profit organization based in the North End since 1910. The council’s mission is to perform charitable deeds to improve the quality of life for members of the community and people in need. The council supports education, cultural, religious, civic, health and sports endeavors.Ausonia has started to reach out to discuss the proposal with the community and neighborhood groups. To date, the Nazzaro Center, North End/Waterfront Health Center, St. Mark’s Society, North End Against Drugs, North End Music and Performing Arts Center, North End Athletic Association and several abutters have submitted letters of support.Knights of Columbus building on North Margin Street of Boston’s North EndThe development team will be presenting their plans to the North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC), North End Waterfront Residents Association (NEWRA), as well as coordinating future public information meetings at the council. The Mayor’s Office held an abutters meeting on Tuesday, April 24th at the council.North End housing shortages and the lack of affordable apartments were also problems in the late 1960s. The Knights of Columbus, Ausonia Council #1513 responded by developing 2 affordable, senior housing developments: Christopher Columbus Plaza at 145 Commercial Street and Ausonia Housing at 185 Fulton Street, now owned and operated by the Boston Housing Authority. In 1985, when development started to become out of control in the neighborhood, the council spearheaded community efforts to change the Zoning Code to protect the neighborhood by limiting building heights to 55 feet and introducing rooftop overlay codes. The council’s Community Affairs Committee chaired public meetings at the council, composed & distributed petitions and worked with North End resident and BRA Zoning Director Linda Bourque to draft the new zoning codes.Over 20 years ago, Ausonia wanted to expand the community benefit of its property by offering the building for affordable housing as part of the original Battery Wharf Project. When the Raymond Group pulled out of the Battery Wharf project, Ausonia reached out to many community cultural, education and health non-profits as well as government agencies to utilize its property for the neighborhood. Although nothing materialized during that process, Ausonia believes that a 100% affordable, elderly housing complex is now the best use for the building. The Knights of Columbus, Ausonia Council #1513 has always been an active member of the North End community. From being a founding member of North End Against Drugs to providing their facility for use by community organizations, Ausonia fulfills their charitable mission to make the North End a great place for everyone. The council has hosted NEAA Little League Baseball Banquets and North End Music & Performing Arts Center rehearsals in the hall. During the Central Artery construction, the North End Waterfront Central Artery Committee CA/T conducted community meetings at the council and the project maintained a public outreach office on-site.Individually, many members of the council play integral roles for many of the community’s non-profit organizations, religious feast societies and church groups. For example, council members served on the North End Community Health Center Board’s Nursing Home Subcommittee, which developed the North End Nursing Home; and more recently made the community aware of the BRA/LDA agreement which was instrumental in saving the nursing home. Many factors were needed to move this project so close to a reality. First, the council has received support and encouragement from Mayor Martin Walsh and his administration. Inspectional Services Department Commissioner William “Buddy” Christopher met with council members and clarified many issues early in the process. Sheila Dillon, the Mayor’s Housing Chief and Director of the Department of Neighborhood Development, and her staff have been meeting with Ausonia for over a year regarding the financing and feasibility of the project. Boston Planning and Development Agency (former BRA) staff have been working with Ausonia on financing and the Article 80 development process.State Representative Aaron Michlewitz and State Senator Joseph Boncore have been involved since the early planning stages; and newly elected City Councilor Lydia Edwards has also been briefed on the development.Grand Knight John Pagliuca added, “the members of Ausonia Council are excited about keeping the council quarters in its current location, assisting our most vulnerable neighbors by providing affordable housing and being able to continue a lifetime of charitable work for our community.” Ausonia Home Association plans to convert the council quarters of the Knights of Columbus, Ausonia Council #1513 at 41 North Margin Street to 23 affordable, elderly apartments and new council quarters. The complex will also have a large community room, which will be available to the North End community, apartment residents and council members.Grand Knight John Pagliuca said, “this development is a win/win project for the community and the council. The neighborhood gets much needed affordable housing, Ausonia Council #1513, K of C receives a new council and Ausonia maintains ownership and control of the property.”*Advertisement*

who limited his association with Goa polls to a mere rally that he addressed in Panaji and spoke barely for 30 minutes, one of master chef Thomas Keller’s 12 US restaurants and bakeries voted to give the United States is about $20000 up only $4000 or so from just over a decade ago But a few restaurants including the French Laundry give cleaners the stature of sous-chefs and extend titles that capture the broad range of responsibilities "We don’t call them dishwashers but porters" says Keller who got his start washing dishes in his mother’s restaurant the late Bay & Surf in Laurel Md "We give them the same respect we give anyone else in the restaurant" Indeed the only difference between the embroidered uniforms worn by his chefs and his porters are the latter’s short sleevesWhen I start my shift at Caracol an upscale Mexican seafood restaurant in Houston Keller’s words are echoing in my head: "Everyone in the restaurant depends on you" he told me "If there are no glasses drinks don’t get served If there is no silverware tables can’t get set If there are no pots or pans food doesn’t get cooked"Yes chef"The main concern for dishwashers is not to get injured by hot pans broken glass or sharp knives" Caracol owner Hugo Ortega tells me before my seven-hour shift Caracol is the largest of his five restaurants one of which includes Backstreet Cafe where the recent James Beard Award winner got his start in the business in 1987 – as a dishwasher and a Mexican immigrant speaking no EnglishOrtega’s imagery suggests a war zone especially for a volunteer recruit with some notable handicaps including inexperience with pots the size of planters and the layout of a 3300-square-foot kitchen In my favor it’s the evening after the Fourth of July when Caracol has just 77 reservations on the books Instead of the usual four dishwashers there will be three including meCaracol has welcomed me with a black shirt vented cap industrial-strength plastic apron and a plastic container of water labeled with my name For tonight I’m "Tomas"My minders – dishwashers Esteban Soc 30 and Joselino Aguilar 19 both from Guatemala – are wearing black trash bags with holes torn out for their heads over their black shirts For their efforts here the dishwashers earn $10 an hour an invitation to join the staff for family meal health insurance and a week’s paid vacation after a year of service The presence of an interpreter (to help with my interviews) reminds me how lonely their job must sometimes beSteps away from the dining room’s oyster bar the dishwashing station is fronted with trash cans into which servers empty uneaten food and lined with an L-shaped stainless-steel counter On one side waiters put like dishes together and on the other side cooks deposit dirty equipment At the start of the shift the counter closest to the kitchen is already littered with utensils from the prep cooks and dishes from late lunchers and early happy-hour customersAt Caracol the dishwashers take turns rinsing sorting and moving dishes through the conveyor-type machine and taking them out sorting them on a steel table and delivering them to stations where other staff members dry the silver and stemware I watch Soc and Aguilar for a while before asking to relieve first one then the otherBy far the messiest chore is the front end of the businessA cutting board with an orange stain sends everyone around me into crying jags when I spray it down Note to self: Hot water on habanero oil creates tear gas Also unlike at home the five-second rule does not apply So when I drop a mixing bowl snatch it up and show it to one of my mentors he nods in the direction of the dishwasher rather than the sorting tableI push a full rack into the dishwashing machine where it gets blasted with 160-degree water and a solution of detergent and a drying agent emerging 30 seconds later Well most of the time When I send a large cutting board into the washer sans rack it brings the machine to a halt and forces my teammates to open a metal door in the center to remove the obstacleA little mindless the repetition can be a lot frantic Remember the "I Love Lucy" episode where Lucy and Ethel fail to keep up with a conveyor belt of chocolates in need of wrapping That was me only with plates and pans instead of candyTaking a cue from Soc who whistles to pass the time I stop rinsing individual plates and arrange them in racks before dousing them with water saving valuable time – and collecting less of Caracol’s menu on myself My teammates smile their approval"You’re hired" jokes AguilarShow me a chef who sings the praises of dishwashers and chances are he or she has spent time "diving for pearls" That’s how restaurant consultant Paul Sorgule describes searching for dishes beneath soap bubbles"If you want to be a chef you need to wash dishes" first says Sorgule former vice president of the New England Culinary Institute "If you don’t know where things go or how a kitchen functions – who does what and where – you have no business" As the executive chef of the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa in Lake Placid NY," he said in the association’s news release.
