Afghanistan UN Mission condemns violence against election workers

With parliamentary, provincial and district elections in Afghanistan just months away, the United Nations mission in the country has condemned any type of violence aimed at derailing the electoral process.An Afghan election worker was killed last Friday in the province of Uruzgan – the first deadly incident involving such workers this year, according to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).“By voting massively last year,” a UNAMA spokesman said, referring to 2004’s national elections, “the Afghan people have demonstrated how important it is for all of them to go and vote to rebuild – through elections – a democratic Afghanistan. This is the will of the people.”With UNAMA facilitation, Afghans are currently making preparations for parliamentary, provincial and district elections, scheduled for 18 September. read more
